SHOT BREAKDOWN

The step by step shot breakdowns...
I happened to luck out with this footage a few years ago with .  I had made the ship  model for another project and decided to marry the two.

Step 1.
Track your footage.  In this case I used Boujou, a relatively straight forward 3d tracking program.

Boujou analysis hundreds of points within the shot and generally produces an excellent track by averaging the locations of all these track points.  However, it's enver straight up 'perfect', so some tweaking is involved.

Once a rock solid track is achieve, the information is exported in the form of camera data for various 3d programs.  In this case, I'm using Maya.

Step 2.
Maya creates a virutal camera for you with the tracking data from Boujou.  The next step is to bring the same footage is as a backdrop for reference.

Geometry is created and placed according to the backdrop, tweaked and modified until you have the shot you like.

The camera has the motion data, so it shakes and jitters and your geometry does not.

Step 3.
Simply turn off the image plane/backdrop and begin rendering your geometry as looking through the Boujou generated camera.

Step 4.
Import all your footage into a compositing program, suxh as After Effects, and begin comp'ing your shot.

In this case, I needed to change the tones, tints, and blurriness of the renders.

I also matched the compression and noise/grain of the original footage with the 3d generated footage. Without this trick, the 3d would always look totally fake.

And that is essentially it.  From the various renders such as color, bump and ambient occlusion, with the original footages and a lot of compositing trickery, a new scene is generated!
